What recent updates have been made to the ANSI Z535 and ISO 3864-2 standards? How should you apply the new ANSI Z535.7 standard to your warnings and instructions? How do you verify that a warning achieved its desired outcome? What is the best way to develop or use symbols in warnings? How do you address wash down requirements in
warning labels?

We had the chance to address these pressing safety topics – and many more – in our recent online event focused on on-product warnings. On January 23, Angela Lambert, our Head of Standards Compliance at Clarion Safety Systems, led an engaging webinar exploring the latest updates to the ANSI Z535 and ISO 3864-2 standards. The session delved into the evolving landscape of global product safety and compliance, addressing the challenges manufacturers face in adapting to ever-changing regulations and best practices.

Key Highlights from the Webinar

  1. The Significance of ANSI Z535 and ISO 3864-2 Standards
Attendees learned about the crucial role these standards play in guiding manufacturers and workplaces toward consistency and compliance in safety warnings and instructions. Angela shed light on the updates made to the ANSI Z535 family of standards—marking their first major review in over a decade—and discussed the implications for today’s safety practices.

  2. Recent Changes and Additions
    • The six ANSI Z535 standards (Z535.1 through Z535.6) were republished in 2022 and 2023, incorporating updates to align with modern manufacturing needs.
    • The highly anticipated ANSI Z535.7, focused on product safety information in electronic media, was released in late 2024, highlighting the growing importance of digitalization.
    • While ISO 3864-2 saw no changes in its 2022 republication, its prior 2016 update included significant improvements in format options and symbol use.

  3. Trends in the Manufacturing Landscape
The session addressed how trends like automation, digitalization, and globalization impact product safety labeling. Angela emphasized the importance of staying ahead of these trends to navigate compliance and liability challenges effectively.

  4. Practical Insights into Compliance
The webinar covered best practices for manufacturers, common mistakes to avoid, and the legal duty to warn, equipping attendees with actionable strategies to strengthen their safety communication.
